Who We Are
When asked about my background, I often tell people that I was home schooled in horticulture. I grew up gardening and my family members were my teachers. Meta, my great-grandmother, loved day lilies, spider lilies, dahlias, sweet peas, gladiolas, roses, and African violets. My grandmother loved azaleas and camellias. My mother loves yellow roses and her and my father taught me the art of shade gardening. My aunt fostered in all of us a love of hydrangeas, specifically the oak leaf hydrangea. It is because of my family that I love and am equipped for what I do everyday.
I thrive in nature, continually learning about and growing new plants in my own garden. This is where I spend time reflecting, praying, solving the world's and my own issues. It’s where I feel alive and what keeps me in touch with the regular, gentle movement of time.
If I had to pick just one favorite plant, it would be the Oak Leaf Hydrangea. Their evolution throughout the year is one of my favorite things to watch- from the peeling bark in the winter to the super fragrant white blooms in early summer which fade with age to shades of pink, ivory, and brown. But I have a million other favorites; it is rare for a gardener to select just one.
I would consider Meta's Garden and my work as gardening work and not landscaping work. It is an art not a one stop landscaping fix all. I understand selecting the right plants for the right spaces and how the garden will evolve over time. I work with each client to understand their concerns and turn their outside space into a garden which encourages them to experience it as an extension of their home.
I have worked in a local garden shop for over 5 years and am a Jefferson County Master Gardener. I have excellent local mentors that are some of the best in the industry. I am licensed and insured to work in the state of Alabama, Jefferson County, and the City of Birmingham. I also have the proper certifications through the Department of Agriculture. I strongly believe in supporting the amazing network of local growers that we have in our area. I look forward to meeting you and helping you turn your yard into a transformative garden space.
